BAGA/ABS Celebrate Mohan Ekushey at City Hall

February 23, 2008, Saturday, 11:00AM to 5:00PM

Dear Bangladesh Community Members,

21 February was proclaimed the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO on 17 November 1999.  The year 2008 has been declared the International Year of Languages by the United Nations, in a resolution passed on 16 May 2007.  The Year is intended to address issues of linguistic diversity (in the context of cultural diversity), respect for all languages, and multilingualism. Please check the following websites:

Bangla was protected by Bangalees from the clutches of Pakistani oppressors in 1952 by preventing Urdu from being the state language of East Pakistan where a vast majority of people spoke in Bangla.   Bangladesh is the only country who sacrificed lives for their mother tongue on 21st February, 1952.  BAGA BOD is proud and honored to invite you to join us in commemorating “Mohan Ekushey” on Saturday February 23, 2008.  To signify the importance of this day, BAGA, in cooperation with Austin Bangla School (ABS), will be holding the “Mohan Ekushey” event at the City Hall.  Please come on time to pay respects to our language martyrs and to show the importance of having BANGLA as our mother language to our younger generation.  Your participation will encourage our younger generation as they perform in the event.  Bring your colleagues, friends and family and help BAGA promote Bangladesh in the greater Austin community.  See event details below:
